Sean Sullivan Kumar

Sean has called Alexandria home his entire life, aside from college, graduate school, and Army assignments. He wasn’t a jock or particularly “fit” growing up, and by the time he’d spent four years practicing law in Northern Virginia, he’d become comfortably out of shape.

Everything changed in the summer of 2009. Shortly after accepting a direct commission as an Army JAG officer, he happened to drive past CrossFit Old Town and watched a group of exhausted athletes stumble back into the gym after a workout. He figured he’d better do whatever that was to himself before the Army did it to him. Curious, he signed up for the Fundamentals course, got thoroughly humbled, started showing up consistently, embraced Paleo, and after just seven weeks had lost 17 pounds, gained muscle, and needed an entirely new wardrobe. He later earned his CrossFit Endurance Certification, which transformed the way he ran and helped him earn a coveted Airborne School slot.

Sean earned his CrossFit Level 1 while stationed in Seoul in 2011 and, in 2013, led the CrossFit Camp Bondsteel military affiliate in Kosovo, programming workouts, coaching classes, managing the coaching staff, mentoring coaches, and teaching running clinics for Soldiers. While there, he trained for and completed the original Athens Marathon from Marathon to Athens. Legend has it the first guy didn’t survive. Sean finished, but decided that was enough marathoning for one lifetime. A lifelong student of fitness and coaching, he currently holds CrossFit Level 1, CrossFit Endurance, and CrossFit Mobility certifications, and previously earned his CrossFit Level 2. Outside the gym, he serves as a strategy advisor, attorney, Virginia licensed real estate broker, and Lieutenant Colonel in the U.S. Army Reserve JAG Corps. Years of military service have left him with the occasional cranky joint, so he’s a firm believer that smart scaling isn’t a shortcut. It’s how you stay healthy enough to keep showing up.

Sean has been part of the MVA community since it opened in 2015 and joined the coaching staff in 2026. For him, coaching at MVA is an opportunity to help strengthen and grow the incredible community Melissa has built, just a few blocks from the street where he grew up. He lives in Alexandria with his wife, Chrissie, their daughter, Clare, and their rescue dog, Indy. His mom, also an MVA member, still lives in the Del Ray home where he grew up. Sean believes the best coaching meets athletes where they are. Whether someone is chasing their first pull-up, preparing for military service, or simply trying to be healthier for themselves or their family, he hopes to help them become healthier, stronger, more confident, and more resilient.

After all, seven weeks of showing up changed his life.
